RIMATARA LORIKEETS ( NOT A PHOTOGRAPH OR PHOTOMANIP)by DilettantO
Second of 4 digital paintings created using Corel Painter vX for a WWF First Day Cover envelope issue for the Cook islands. As with the first piece in this issue, here this was composed using elements from two reference photographs, one showing one of the adults bending down to the chick, the other showing the other adult peering down into the ‘nest’ from the rim. In that ref pic the other adult was sitting upright and not engaging with the chick and therefore, I thought this composition was a more ‘engaging’ one, even though the chick doesn’t look to happy about being fussed over! I also changed the background, making it much darker. In both ref shots it was rather overexposed and washed out looking.
Beautifully done and I like the sunlight on the tail feathers. They are indeed very cute little birds. This is a lovely piece of “family” artwork…… XX :)
Thanks Lozzie. I think the ref pics were shot with flash because the shadows inside the ‘nest’ were very solid and didn’t look natural, so I softened them to make them look more like sunlight. The light on the tail is pretty much as appears in the ref pic, even though the background foliage was overexposed. Xxx

Just Awesome my friend, so beautiful colours they are.
Thanks Raj. Lorikeets are always fun to paint because they are not only colorful but very cute and expressive.
Amazing work Owen, incredible colour and reality in it, lovely art! :O)
Thanks Vanessa. I was particularly interested in the colors of the chick’s plumage, compared to the adults’, and the fact that it’s beak is black, not orange. X
lurve the lil chick, and the hovering parents. that seems ot be just how it should be. wonder when humans will get the idea?! we have bab black cockatoos around at the moment, which is cute except for the scree scree scree sound they make which is like fingernails on a chalkboard and just sets your teeth on edge. enough whining ,,,,,,,, beautiful work mate, simply perfect.
Thanks Tempe. Baby black cockies? Hehehe just about as bad as the noise baby pink and greys make…like an asthmatic donkey. Where I used to live we had pink and greys, corellas and 28’s(Port Lincoln Parrots) but here, we only get doves, honeyeaters and the very occasional rainbow lorikeet…and a few seagulls…X

Excellent work!

Lovely work!
Colour wise these beauties would give our Rainbow Lorikeets a run for their money!
Thanks Trish. I wonder if they are as noisy?

They would need to be very voluble if they were to top the Lorikeets in social chatter noise :)
