Second of 4 digital artworks created for a WWF FDC envelope issue. Because I already had the background painted for this, I managed to get the rest of this painted in one day ( around 10 hour’s painting ) so it saved me about 4 hour’s work. You will notice that the bg has been knocked out of focus and some foreground has been added, so in effect, we have ‘pulled back’ from the previous design posted last week. Even though I re-use the bg artwork, I try and change it in some way each time, either showing more of it, or a different part of it, or as in this instance shift the focus, in much the same way as a photographer would, taking 4 shots on the same location.
I hope to post the next design tomorrow and the final one the following day.

beach, bird, coast, wildlife, dilettanto, owen bell, thick knee, esacus magnirostris

I have been a freelance illustrator for over 40 years. For the last 10 years or so, I have been working exclusively digitally, using Corel Painter x V on PC. I do NOT manipulate photographs to create my paintings. I use photos for reference purposes only.

    great work!!

  • Thanks Nish. I wasn’t expecting to finish this in one day, as it has two birds in it, but it all went better than I expected and so I managed it. A good feeling when that happens!

this is so perfect!! hard to believe that you can do it that fast… and that it’s really better than a photograph… you are one talented man!!! b. XHX

Thank B, shame the ‘talent’ doesn’t include making lots of money in a short time!!!
Seriously though, one of these usually takes a day when there is just one subject, which is why I was surprised I managed to paint two of them in the same time. I got a new high definition 24" LCD monitor the other day and that had made a BIG difference as the resolution is fantastic, making it even easier to see detail.
I’ll have another on ready tomorrow. This one will be a female and fledgling, so a bit easier than 2 adults. XHX

Wow, this is stunning, and that beach background worked a dream

  • Thanks Hon. It’s slightly different because I knocked it out of focus and added some foreground, but still recognisable I think. I might use it again it the next one, with a different foreground. Will paint that tomorrow and post it then. Can’t use it in the final pic because it’s a closeup of a chick. Will post that one on Wednesday X
