BLUE MARLIN 1

First of 4 digital artworks created for a WWF FDC envelope issue

I love these beautiful critters and I have pretty strong views on those individuals who choose to KILL them in the name of ‘sport’.
As I key this, it’s 3:30 am and probably not a good time to get into this particular ‘bete noire’ of mine, so maybe when I’ve finished up here I’ll go sleep on it and in the morning maybe write a journal entry on it….don’t say I didn’t warn you….

BLUE MARLIN 1 belongs to the following groups:

* Painted Nature * and Nature's Wonders Available for sale as

Greeting Cards, Matted Prints, Laminated Prints, Mounted Prints, Canvas Prints and Framed Prints

  • DilettantO replied

yeah, with that ‘beak’ there was no way I was going to cram it into the allotted space. Same went for all 4 of these.

What size do you do the orginal drawing & what size is the file you down load ? You seem to down load very fast or are you using 2 computers at the same time.

  • DilettantO replied

The artwork size for stamps is x4 repro so they’re about ‘A5’ in real terms, and the FDC art is repro size which is only about 70mm x 70mm, but you must remember that ‘physical size’ on a computer is relative to resolution so it’s not like I’m working on an A5 piece of paper or even tinier. Repro resolution of postage stamps is 1200dpi so when they reduce my art down x4 that what the rez becomes, because the working rez is 300dpi. This means I can zoom in several 100% to do very fine detail without the thing pixillating to all hell. The working files are around 35mb, but when I convert to JPGS for u/l, they scrunch down to under 2mb….never know how that works, but it explains the quick u/l time. No, I only use the one laptop for Bubbling….. I’m done for tonight. Catch you tomorrow!
Thanks for all the attention you’ve shown me today. Much appreciated.

Are these really computer drawings? Wow! Very impressive. I like how this image breaks the frame (and, I guess, breaks a basic rule of art ‘keep inside the frame’ . . . breaking rules can be very effective)

  • DilettantO replied

Thanks AndreJ! On the actual FDC envelope, which there are designed for, there is no frame. I just added that for the purposes of selling as prints on RB, but like you, I like to break out of it sometimes, just to make the image more dynamic.

Ona side-note one of my models shares a similar passion to yours – about preserving the life of the seas. Hannah mermaid takes part in such protests all over the world and has made many films and documentaries on the subject.

  • DilettantO replied

WelI, don’t protest as such, but I admire those who do. Way to go, Hannah Mermaid!!! I like to think my work helps to promote the cause, just a little.

Do you know of Hannah? She has a considerable profile but in limited areas perhaps . . .

  • DilettantO replied

Can’t say I do. I don’t get out much… The only ‘Hannah’ I know, in mermaid form is Darryl Hannah in the movie….not the same Hannah I suspect…..

I remember her so well. She made quite a Splash! I’ve put up Hannah mermaid shots on line and had comments from all over the world. She is pretty well known in some demographics. . . Your sea-life work is most impressive.

Thanks AndreJ. It’s probably the most challenging work I do. Not only are there some amazing colorations, patterns and intricate structures to be replicated
(see the feather stars I posted!!!), also I often have to compensate for the ‘color cast’ of the water which can be tough, especially if I don’t have ref shots of the critter out of the water, which, in most cases, is just as well, because it means it’s dead. I’d like to see a pic of Hannah if you could either post one or email me.
