Juvenile White-winged Crossbill by

This White-winged Crossbill (Loxia leucoptera) is a young male who has yet gained most of his adult pink plumage. In this photo some of the pink feathers are evident.

Named for their crossed mandibles these finches wander endlessly in search of food as they extract seeds from cones.

This photo was taken in March of 2011 in the Ottawa Region.

Beautiful capture. What a little cutie.

  • Although these birds are skittish and usually spotted as tree trop ornaments, this flock was more interested in food/pine cones that had fallen to the ground. Right place and right time. ;-) Thanks again Bunny.

Very nice Francine. I’ve not seen one this close for a couple of years.

  • Thanks Stephen. I was fortunate enough to have a girlfriend call me and let me know that they were in their front yard and very cooperative. ;-)
