This White-winged Crossbill (Loxia leucoptera) is a young male who has yet gained all of his adult pink plumage. In this photo some of the pink feathers are evident.

Named for their crossed mandibles these finches wander endlessly in search of food as they extract seeds from cones.

    That’s so beautiful. The colors around the nest and the keenly disguised bird, you can see him thinking, are incredibly fine. You’ve even caught a blush on his chest.
