Blue Jays are one of Ontario’s most recognizable birds. It’s raucaus call “jay-jay-jay” makes it impossible to miss and sometimes noisy, nasal "queele queedle queedle-queedle sounds a little like a mute trumpet. They are beautiful with a conspicuous plumage and are quite resourceful and vocally diverse often immitating various sounds.

Image is slightly cropped and sharpened in DPP.

A million years ago, we lived in a room in Far Rockaway, (NY close to where the plane fell from the sky in Nov 2001) UNDER a family of Blue Jays nesting in the roof. I do not recommend this! The babies were hungry all the time & started yelling for food at about 3am every morning. It was a pleasure to finally move into a nice quiet apartment.
Beautiful birds, lovely to look at, as your image shows, but NOT nice neighbours when you would prefer to sleep a little longer!!!!!!! LOL

  • LOL That must have been quite the experience. And pain in the “b-hind” but you just got to love them. I’ve actually observed a pair of Pied-billed Grebes, feeding 3 babies… now there’s a sight to watch. One of the adults actually attacked the baby because it wouldn’t stop peeping (loudly) not seconds after being fed and wanting more. ;-) Thanks for sharing SilkyPix. Much appreciated.
