A low growing shrub with very prickly stems. Bristles not broad or flattened at their base. Flowers white to pink, sometimes with pink stripes, measured to 5 cm diameter; very fragrant. Leaves pinnate, leaflets 7 to 11, leaflets obovate.
A few very short hairs on leaf tops, leaf bottoms puberelent, margins ciliate.
Habitat is hillsides and prairie. Common.
