This “Great Sapphirewing” is really a very large hummingbird. It is similar but larger than the “Sparkling Violetears” with the absent violet marking across the ear portion of the head. They are not noisy as the Violetears species are, which is a pleasant characteristic. They are also distinguished by a small white spot behind the eye and pink feet.

    Thank you Patricia! I had to take quite a few to get one of this quality but it worked. They are quite large so their movements are less jittery.

    Thanks so much, Vickie! Now that I’ve discovered these birds, I’d like to get a series. I caught these on Monserrate as well but it was quite a challenge. They would just come out of hiding and get to work on these flowers when another wave of people would pass by and finish that photo shoot and we did that for about an hour and a half. If the weather and time commitments, etc.etc would ever come together I think I could get some great shots! It’s definitely an exercise in patience.

    Thanks! I was fortunate to be close enough to capture this one but I have to confess these hummers are huge! i mean, I’m talking 3 to 4 times the size of a rufous or rubythroated hummer (maybe a bit larger than a sparrow. So the image is a bit deceiving!

    Fantastic capture and the colors are so vivid!! Haven’t ever seen this species before so thanks for all the info. (I spent hours this summer trying to get a good shot of the swarms of ruby-throated hummers at our feeders. By the end, my feet hurt and my arm felt like lead. LOL! I only got one half-way decent shot out of a hundred or more shots.)
