Hummingbirds are my ultimate challenge. However, these Amethyst throated hummingbirds are somewhat easier to capture as their movements are less jittery! About this time of the year the Kangaroo Paw flowers are in full bloom and they all (hummingbirds and flowerpiercers) just go nuts over these flowers. It is an entertaining territory war to say the least…but an added frustration as they rarely allow each other time to get even a nibble at these flowers unless they can sneak into the flower patch undetected.

  • Enivea

    Enivea

Gee, this really caught my attention! Instantly recognised the Paw and the hummingbird, but thought hey, how can this be? What an amazing combination, and so surprised that the plants grow in your climate. Thank you for your patience in bringing this great shot about.

  • Blair Wainman replied

Thanks so much for your note! I should explain the incongruence. I don’t actually live in Saskatchewan. But it is where I am from. Currently, I live in Bogotá, South America. (You will notice a strange mixture of photography, Temperate climate/Canada and Tropical, Colombia). However, having said that, the Kangaroo Paw flower is not indigenous to Colombia but is actually imported from Australia and at the altitude that we are at here in Bogotá, it flourishes…and the hummingbirds go crazy over it!

  • Enivea

    Enivea

There is a similar happening here with fuchsias, as the native honey eaters adore them, even tho the plants originate in South America! Maybe there is something for us to learn from these events….

  • Blair Wainman replied

Isn’t that interesting! It sure makes for interesting natural dynamics and I enjoy the entertainment it provides!

I can’t believe how wonderfully your kangaroo paws are growing! The couple i have growing are very sad looking indeed and i LIVE in Australia! LOL
Such a great capture of the Hummingbird too!

  • Blair Wainman replied

Thank you so much for your kind words! You know it’s interesting because this Kangaroo Paw is not native to Colombia but it really thrives here…they really have to keep pruning it back because it grows so hard!

  • Lynn Bauer

    Lynn Bauer

Hummingbirds are my favs, too! I used to sit on my back porch for hours waiting for them to feed. Don’t have the same set-up these days, plus there haven’t been too many in our immediate area this year. You’re inspiring me to go out and look for them, though! This picture is a real beauty!!! Thanks for sharing!!

  • Blair Wainman replied

Thanks Lynn! If you only knew how many hours of tails, wing tips and blurs that I had to wade through to get just a few. I am so fortunate to live in a land where there are hummingbirds everywhere. They are so entertaining to watch…and challenging to capture. (I should state here that the address on my site is not my physical address. I work as a missionary here in Colombia, S.A. My home is in Canada)..hence the incongruence in uploads from constrasting parts of the world.

  • Lois Bryan

    Lois Bryan

how I love the photo … AND your commentary … still, you did a beautiful job … as always!!!! I’ve got pages of hummingbirds here in the computer, but nothing worth uploading … this one of yours is a keeper!!!

  • Blair Wainman replied

Oh, I have to laugh! You should see the pages of hummingbirds I have and I have deleted at least 3 times as many. Which reminds me that I really need to weed out so many more. I think I may have less than 1% that are worth uploading. I’m so glad that you loved this one. It’s the ultimate challenge for me, for which I wish I had a better camera. Thanks again!

  • MaeBelle

    MaeBelle

Great shot,Blair, they are hard to photograph all right, but you did a fantastic job,God Bless,Mae

Kangaroo Paw flowers, huh? New one to me. Worthy feature as this shot is breathtaking! The hummer and the flowers are a great color combination!

    and never be caged!
