Misty Morning in the Karri Forest by

This picture was taken on a misty (and smoky!) morning in April 2004, from halfway up the Bicentennial Tree, near Pemberton, Western Australia.

Pentax MZ-5N, Fuji Provia 100 colour transparency film.

Featured in Photographic Excellence…, August 2011
Challenge winner, Best of Western Australia, September 2011

The karri (Eucalyptus diversicolor) can reach well over 60m in height, making it the third tallest tree in the world.

Great shot Dieter, mist and early morning I think are the best conditions for Karri forest photos ;)

  • Thanks Jan :) and I absolutely agree! it’s such a beautiful area, with excellent walking along the Bibbulmun etc. My wife just reminded me it was quite smoky here as well, which probably explains the colour of that mist…

Without having been at this place I get the impression that it’s a fantastic forest….
The Karri trees look great and it’s a wonderful capture Dieter,- nice scan.

  • it’s one of my favourite places in Australia (so far), such a beautiful area. Check out Jan’s collection for a few more views. Thanks for the visit, Steen :) cheers

The colours are soooooo beautiful, Dieter. Amazing range of pastel hues…
    :) :) :)

  • yay! thanks Mieke :) that’s the best thing you could have said :) :) I had this printed a few years ago and the guy at the lab insisted it was too ‘cool’ … but it’s a cold, misty morning! of course it’s a bit cool…

Awesome place…..and what a great shot ! I’m impressed with the quality – no one would ever guess this was from a scan ! Cool work, mate! xx

  • funny how times change. In 2003 not many people thought a digital photograph could match up to a scanned transparency… ;)

Beautiful image, Dieter! The linear nature of the composition and the textures and soft colours are wonderful. To me that is so iconically Australian. Lovely work!

  • thanks heaps Damienne :) aren’t the eucalypts so incredibly varied, yet all so characteristically Australian?

This is beautiful Dieter, the muted tones give it an “impressionist” feel I think, like a Fred McCubbin painting.

  • Thanks so much, Janine :) My Dad loved McCubbin’s landscapes… I like to think he would have agreed with you…
