Born in a quiet city in close vicinity to Newcastle, an array of established industrial and country atmosphere fed the wonderment of a young man searching for an identity.

The blend of a conservative, hard working community and the beauty of the Hunter Valley was an inspiration ‘to not just photograph, but to capture images of everyday life’.

In 2000, Dickson moved to Melbourne. ‘I felt drawn to Melbourne. It is a place of remarkably complex character. Everywhere you look, there is constant change, and if you’re not quick, you can miss something truly amazing’.

It was a move that was to prove a substantial development in Dickson’s work. Through life experience and working in a broader environment, his work shows a clear and defined style.

Dickson’s images have an intensity portrayed with simplicity, and speak volumes by displaying an emotive depth of colour and striking intensity. The deeply personal and simple nature of the images invites you into a world of an artist who breathes life into the ordinary.

Dickson’s visual inspirations range from photographers Bill Henson, Uta Bath, and Michal Rovner to graphic designer David Carson, and swiss surrealist H.R Giger.
