Jeanie

Jean was 85 when she past and I had the pleasure in knowing her for 6 years. I would visit her once a month. She lived across the park from me and we struck up a great friendship, full of laughter. We would giggle ourselves together as she tried to teach me how to knit …. of course I kept dropping too many!! She had an amazing outlook on life and was feircely independent.

Walking through the supermarket, I came across her.
Her small frame standing tall.
She seemed to be struggling with her necklace,
I decided to lend a hand.
We laughed together as she told me the very same
necklace used to accompany her dancing in the old days
and never fell off.
The years have gone by and the necklace remained strong
until this day….....

We would sit and talk about life and love.
She only ever loved one man in her life, although she
had a few, but they were merely company when he left.
Her biggest love was Bill till the day she died.
She meet him in the Post Office before the war,
always laughing at the fact that she wanted to lock the door
so he couldn’t get out!
So young together, so thrilled to come across one another.

Then he left,....and came back after those dreadful years.
He helped lay the train tracks that stand strong before us today.
Seven short years she had with him until he collapsed unexpectedly
at the dinner table.

Even though she had lost love ….she carried with her a sense of humor
that attracted me. I remember the day she tugged my arm like a child
about to tell a secret.

There she opened her wardrobe to show me a dancing dress she had
kept over all of these years….full of frills and layers upon layers.
She looked at me with a grin and said “I’m going to be buried in this,
won’t it go up real well” and “Lucky I’ve stayed slim enough to fit it still”
