I agree with Ronald – its a really nice portrait of this lady. Such character in her face. Dont think too much of her hat though!

Hahaha, the headwear is pretty common amongst the elderly White Yao minority. Traditionally they dress in much more humble tones of colour compared to their counterparts, the Red Yao, who typically have very bright red and pink clothing. This old lady was sitting on the doorstep of her hut selling spicy red chillis and chilli-paste when I wandered by.

Diane you really have captured this well, it would have been so easy for her black costume to be washed in the background. But it all looks great and crisp.

I sat and looked hard at this image for a long time. There is an intrinsic beauty in the haggardness of the old, and they seem show some of the times they have lived through in their expressions. I agree about the hat, but the photo would be less without it, as it sets off the rest of the lady so well, and forces you to look at her, rather than the peripheral things like her clothing or background. To me, she appears to be watching something behind you intently, perhaps wondering whether to intervene, or just absorb what she is looking at. A great image!
