We had a bumper crop of Monarch Butterflies this summer. However, some of them laid eggs, became caterpillars, then formed their chrysalis’ so late in the season, we knew they wouldn’t survive. They hung for weeks in the weirdest of places, one being the tire of our motorhome. Some were on the garage wall, on the boat, on the overhead garage door, just everywhere. It turns out there were 7 we worried about. So having talked to someone about how to save them so they might have a chance to hatch out, we decided to put these chrysalis’ in a big jar, then we put holes in for air, some dead and green leaves, some grass and twigs to attach the chrysalis’ to. Here is the outcome in a series of shots taken over the course of 4-5 days. I didn’t want to tell the story sooner because I wanted all 7 butterflies to get the attention they deserved for their fight for life. I did the best I could. This was a great experience for me as well, and my little granddaughter loved watching them in the jar. Sorry the photo story is so long. Each title is on the laminate frame.

After 3 days, the first one hatched
First Monarch to be released is the one in the main image

Second butterfly released the same day

You can see three more are ready to go after 4 days in the jar

Numbers 3, 4 & 5 are released

Number 6 released

Number 7 released this morning

Saying Goodbye. This is butterfly #1. It seemed they all had their own personality
