I want to dedicate this photo to my good friends Rick & Deb Larson for their continued support on all my photo work, specially Alaskas. You stood in my footprints in your beautiful fall photo of this gorgeous glacier! xoxoxo
Top 2 in a Challenge in Pacific Northwest – December 2009
The Matanuska Glacier heads in the Chugach Mountains and trends northwest 27 miles. Some 18,000 years ago the glacier reached all the way to the Palmer area. The glacier’s average width is 2 miles; at its terminus it is 4 miles wide. The glacier has remained fairly stable the past 400 years. At the glacier terminus, melt water drains into a stream which flows into the Matanuska River. It is located 42 miles from Sutton, 53 miles from Palmer and 94 miles from Anchorage.
