The air was thick with smoke as I headed to Cleveland Point on Sunday afternoon. It is due to the terrible fires on North Stradbroke Island which have been burning for over a week now. You could not see Stradbroke Island at all from the mainland, it was just wall of smoke in Moreton Bay. Thankfully a storm came through yesterday afternoon bringing with it torrential rain which was a godsend to the weary firefighters. Unfortunately the rain wasn’t enough to douse the fire, it’s started up again late this afternoon threatening homes and forcing evacuations.
