Soooo…I’m driving along a country road to my parents place for a visit, and spotted a television someone had thrown onto the side of the road, and thought it might be a cool pic to add to the abandoned items group.
Stopped, did a U turn and parked the car on the side of the road to take the pic. Just about to push the button, to take the shot and I noticed something out of the corner of my eye…..:O
Upon closer inspection, I find I am kneeling down in the grass amongst (at a quick count) about 20 spiders…!!!!
For a start, I cant begin to tell you how much I hate spiders….I imediately jumped up, screamed, dropped my poor camera…started frantically brushing off what I imaged were a thousand spiders crawling all over me :O….of course there were none, but I had that creepy yukky feeling now….hard to get rid of, once you have it…LOL
Now, for the technical details. After I was less creeped out, I researched what they were.
They are Austracantha minax female and male.
The six spined, Christmas or jewel spider or Austracantha minax. The female is about 8 mm long, cream colored with white and black while the male is only 3 mm long and white and black.
They are not dangerous, and if they bite you, only causes minor local skin irritation for a couple of hours.
Even so, just the look of them was enough to creep me out :O :O

nice sharp picture – all you have to remember is Charlotte’s Web, and what lovely people spiders really are – cant say I’ve seen one of these, thankfully.
Oh I love that movie :))) Thanks Geof, I’ll try and remember that :O Although, a fear of spiders is something I’ve had all my life. It stems from my father chasing me around the house with a huntsman spider…..scarred for life :O

I walked into a web of one of these guys on the weekend! After the initial shock of blundering blindly into the sticky threads I stuck around to take a look at the weird spikes on the web maker. Weird spiders aren’t they? Love their colours and armour but I couldn’t get any decent images like this one!
They are really freaky looking aren’t they, but as Geof reminded me, I should have thought of them as lots of tiny “Charlotte’s”..LOL They are amazing once you get over the creepy feeling :O Thanks for taking a look Georgie :))
