Barberry Explosion
This was created from a photograph of a barberry bush with the afternoon sun coming through its leaves. You can view the photo and details of the pattern in my blog entry on this pattern.
Each of the pieces of the pattern has a reflection of itself on every edge, so it seems continuous throughout, but not all the pieces are the same shape, which keeps it from being too repetitive. There are areas with 16, 12, and 8 sides, with transitional elements in between to connect them up.
I hope to interest someone in making gift wrap from patterns like this some day.

love it!
Douglas Hill replied
Me too!
I mean, thank you, glad you enjoy it.
malzard
Really interesting image Douglas, i love this sort of intricate design.
Douglas Hill replied
Yes, I see your “Butterflies in Black” does some of these things and more, because you have greater control over the material. This one fits together nicely and has more color than I can usually get when using photographs as a base. The light dots give it a sort of “lights in the sky” quality from a distance, too.
Thanks for commenting.

interestic, this one reminds me of Japanese patterned paper!
Douglas Hill replied
I’ve never seen Japanese patterned paper. Can you suggest any places I can look for good examples?
Cvail73
there for example!

Douglas Hill replied
Now THAT’S paper! Much more richly connected than what I see in stores in the USA. (Maybe because I live in a rural area and am not wealthy.) Thank you for the link.
Cvail73
yes It’s another great of japanese traditions. They are into perfection too. Japanese is beautiful :))) So now you have confirmed that my comment was a compliment.lol!!

What an outrageous idea! With phosphorescent dyes.

Thanks Douglas – likewise – I found your commentary to be most useful and stimulating -
Lefever
can you please go make this into a textile print. I would love curtains/summer dress! Great pattern.
Douglas Hill replied
I wish I knew how to make textile prints. If anyone does, please bubblemail me.

This is beautiful, and it’s so interesting to read how it came about. I agree with Lefever, I’d like to see this in a fabric print…
Douglas Hill replied
Thank you. I was wandering around, trying to occupy the time while waiting for my daughter’s dance class to finish when I noticed the late sun coming through these leaves, producing the wonderful range of colors.
aroha
Well you obviously have extraordinary artistic vision, as I have read your blog and I couldn’t see anything like this in your original picture! That having said I feeling quite inspired, I want to have a go!
Jennifer Resemius
This is just stunning anyway but when you read how you created this it’s just brilliant. I agree with previous post you have an extraordinary artistic vision. Beautiful.
Douglas Hill replied
I’m grateful for your appreciation.

Brilliant design and color! Reminds me of William Morris! Congrats on making homepage!
Douglas Hill replied
Thank you. Hadn’t heard of William Morris. Thought vaguely of cigarettes. Searched google, wikipedia, found morris.artpassions.net. I see what you mean. He obviously cared about patterns and was full of ideas for how to use the technology of his day to realize them.
catblack
amasing! gr8ly inspired too
Douglas Hill replied
Thanks! Partly inspiration, partly playing with thousands of patterns and selecting the ones I still like after a while, then watching which ones other people like, too.
