With anticipation of soaking in gorgeous sunshine, and watching the seagulls and pelicans secure an easy catch by the wharf, the coastal village of Eden in NSW is a place where a traveller can forget the grind of every day chores.

Renowned for its superb fishing, Eden provides visitors opportunity to glean history of whaling in Australia. A visit to the Eden Killer Whale Museum gives an insight to the practices of killing humpbacks, and other whales, for commercial purposes. Fortunately, that barbaric practice is no longer pursued in Australia, however it’s interesting to learn how it was conducted. A journey to see the Davidson Whaling Station is worthwhile, as it’s here where whaling operations were based.

The Eden wharf is a hive of activity, particularly on week days. With trawlers returning with a sizeable catch, it’s likely to witness professional fishermen unloading their catch. It’s a spectacle that attracts those wandering the sizeable concrete wharf, and interaction with the locals is friendly and informative.

The rock pool has quite simply seen better days, however it’s a great place to explore. If the weather is fine, take your togs and a towel and soak in the fresh salt air. Take a dip in the shallow waters, too.

For the last two decades I’ve been visiting Eden and made it a habit to find something new during each visit. Just recently I wandered around Cocora Beach with my camera and found conditions to be favourable for photography. With some interesting cloud formations, this area comes alive when the sun peeks through the clouds.

Day trip options from Eden are numerous, with the Ben Boyd National Park a must do. A highlight is Green Cape Lighthouse, and on a stormy day you can experience your hat being blown off in this spot. Most days are enticing, but never discount days which provide an out of the box weather experience.

Accommodations options are many. Ranging from caravan parks, motels, hotels, through to five star luxury apartments overlooking the waters of the Tasman Ocean and Twofold Bay.

Make Eden a place to spend a week on the stunning Sapphire Coast – particularly if you’re the curious type who likes to investigate the nooks and crannies of Australia’s great coastline. Also, don’t forget your fishing rod!
