Save the humpback whales

Note: Please click on images for more details.
Each August, the whale watching season begins in earnest on Australia’s picturesque eastern seaboard. As a result of my journey to Hervey Bay during August 2006, I had the pleasure to record the magnificent humpbacks as they frolicked in the calm waters of Hervey Bay.
I’d like to extend an invitation to you to view my whale watching slideshow. The slideshow is a culmination of work which was undertaken by me with the kind assistance of the staff and crew of Spirit of Hervey Bay.
As most are aware, the humpbacks are still being slaughtered for what can be loosely claimed as research reasons. Bearing that in mind, please give your support the best way you can to help “Save the whales”.
The link to my slideshow will take you to the Photodex web site. The slideshow has been produced using the ProShow Gold software package. Upon reaching the site, you may be required to download a tiny bit of software to view the show. Many photographers may already have this software installed on their system.
I cordially invite you to experience one of our greatest animals in action from onboard the whale watching vessel ‘Spirit’ of Hervey Bay.
- Please copy and paste web link below into your browser
- Load Photodex software if required (a minor detail)
- Wait for show to load
- Click whale tail to commence show

hey there! Good on you for getting into the whalewatching spirit of Hervey Bay!
I grew up whale watching in the Bay as my mum worked on the Kingfisher Boats and Fraser Island for quite a few years. I actually want to go and work next whale watching season so look out for me…. I’ll be the deckhand with the biggest smile on her face!
Oh and back to saving the whales… did you ever meet Barnicle Bill? He was a whaler who has devoted his life since to stopping the whaling.
xx Jess

Hi Jess. Thanks for dropping by.
I read on a pic around here you were from Hervey Bay. Great spot and I can tell you’re passionate about the place. No wonder really because once you get bitten by the bug in stays with you forever.
I met one of the guys from the Kingfisher Boats last year onboard the the ‘Spirit’. He was relieving for the Captain on the ‘Spirit’ and was at the wheel on one of my trips. He appears in the slideshow and was terrific company.
I’m hoping to make it to Hervey Bay this year, and I’ll seek you out to say hello. Would be great to see your smile.
On page 32 of the June/July 2007 edition of Australian Traveller magazine, I have a piece published titled; ‘48 Hours In … Hervey Bay’. It’s a short informative piece that points out a few of the places to stay, places to eat and things to do.
Here’s a link to the Australian Traveller web site where the piece appears.

AAwsome slideshow Darren! I have had the privilage of seeing these beautiful creatures up close in Hervey Bay and can’t wait to get back. Well done!
Jessica, what an amazing job that would be! I am so envious!

What a pity! I’ve been waiting almost an hour to see it already so had to give up unfortunately but I’m sure it would’ve been a sight to see Darren. I appreciated the invitation all the same. We had the opportunity to view Humpback Whales last September near Exmouth W.A. It was only a week later that it was no longer possible, as a tour operator, to get so close the whales.
Thanks for your comments about the “Save the Humpback” painting I did, I’m happy to keep us all aware!
Cheers

Hi Nicola.
Thank you for your kind words and glad you enjoyed the show. The whales seem very intelligent and they are pleasure to witness.
