Goulburn Valley Water situation due to the fires
Goulburn Valley Water’s Managing Director has confirmed that the Kilmore Water Treatment Plant has been seriously damaged and Stage 4 water restrictions will need to come into effective immediately.
Towns affected by Stage 4 water restrictions are Kilmore, Wandong and Heathcote Junction. Water usage is restricted to essential in-house use only. Obviously if people need to protect their homes from fires that goes without question, water can be used. Goulburn Valley Water is working with DSE and Yarra Valley Water to reinstate the water supply connection from Melbourne.
The Broadford Water Treatment Plant is without power at the moment and Goulburn Valley Water is organising a temporary generator. Residents of Broadford and Waterford Park are requested that they use water for essential in-house use only until further notice.
At this stage Goulburn Valley Water has no reports of damage to the water supply system in Alexandra, Eildon and Thornton. However, the Corporation requests that all customers in these towns conserve water wherever possible.
Marysville and Buxton –like everyone we are waiting to gain access to these towns to assist the situation.. There will be a water quality problem in these towns and residents should assume that the water is not safe to drink. Once we know the full situation we will reassess the position and provide a safe temporary water supply.

I’m told that about 20 houses out the back of our place (Hampton Park) have been damaged or lost. We’ve had a fairly bad grass fire across the road and out the back. Due to the urgent need elsewhere, we had to rely on bucket brigades until the fire brigade was able to get here. I’ll be posting a journal later, with pics of the after effects, later – I couldn’t get pics of while it was happening, I’m afraid, was too busy filling buckets. I think my tanks (12,000 liters total) are now about half full along with what is sure to be an horrendous water bill next time.
Angela Stewart
We’ve just had our 12th consecutive day of 40+ degrees in Mildura…hoping for a cool change tomorrow! My prayers are with those living anywhere near the fires, and the guys doing their best to control them!

Our thoughts are with you chaps.

Great live feed darren.. FIres are truly devastating.. Just had one about 2km from my house – they have managed to get it under control after only 4 hours. A mild one compared to Victoria’s at the moment. Thoughts go out to the families and friends of everyone including those brave firey’s…

Thanks Darrin – best summary I’ve seen all day. Fires north, south and west of us – so far we’ve been lucky, tomorrows another day? Thinking of you all, with everything crossed!

Thanks sonia. I’m monitoring various sources and posting what I can. Things are not easing up – and it’s 10.50pm. Some areas are seriously under threat.

I am from churchill….Most probably going to have a sleepless night. God Almighty saved us…If the wind were at the opposite direction, I can’t imagine how much the gledonald fire could cost. It was a horrific experience when I saw the fire moving like a jet plane with a wind gust…Lets hope the wind stops and pray for a rain tonite (a rain, not mud drops as it happened this evening ).

Over the last few days there was also a fire up near Corryong, at the top end of the Nariael Valley. Luckily they got to it quickly with a couple of planes dropping fire retardant and about 5 helicopters water bombing. It was in very steep and rugged terrain which hampered access for fire fighters. All up it only burnt about 100ha but it could have been much worse if not for the people fighting it.

The churchill-jeeralang bush fire caused 9 deaths and the spread is 200,000 hectres (sydney herald). Now the threat message is downgraded to alert to all the people who are at the east of churchill, mainly traralgon south, callignee and upper, carrajung, woodside, gormandale and other known-unknown community near this area.
According to the wish of almighty, we, the residents of churchill are still safe. and the fire seems to be easing; large and going though. Thanks to you darren, because I watched your site the whole night and got the latest messages. I slept at 7.20 am today and dreamt about the fire coming all the time.
It looked like armageddon from 4.30 pm yesterday, the sky was ruby red, mud and ash drops were coming down with rain. and we watched the blaze moving so fast it is hard to keep track. I took some pics and hopefully will upload them.
Thanks everyone.

I don’t know what rock I have been hiding under down here in Tasmania, to miss the news and all that is going on with the fires.
I have just finished reading a number of news articles all over the web. How concerning.
Among the news articles I read, I read that the Ash Wednesday fires were 23 years ago. I thought to myself, I could not believe that has been 23 years already – I remember helping my grandmother deliver relief in western Victoria so vividly.
Then I got to thinking.
I find it disappointing to the utmost to have this type of event happen again, to have a bushfire with major loss of life and property destruction, again.
And only 23 years ago.
My wellwishes to all of those affected. My congratulations to the people out there that are fighting the fires and assisting in any way.
And my utter disgust at the arsonists that light these fires. My mind cannot comprehend why. May they be the ones who suffer the most.

its a horrible awful weekend. And it was bad enough when people I didn’t know were affected. But my cousin and her kids are in Warragul and her friends are in Longwarry… too close. They were watching the flames flickering at them while attending a funeral. At least my are safe now. But the fires aren’t out yet, so I’ll not be calm until then.
What a horrific day, for everyone. NSW haven’t had a great few days either… but they’re not on the news as much as the Vic fires or the Qld floods.
Thanks for the info Darren, it’ll be here for the history books as well as keeping us all informed. I’m glad you’re ok too. I hope everyone else is safe too. I don’t know where you all are, but will be sending wishes and prayers your way. Please be safe. xxxx

I spoke to a friend ealier today that had been evacuated from the fires. The area is still closed down so they are still waiting to hear if their house & animals have survived the blaze.
It seems very ironic that I uploaded images from Marysville just days ago… a town that is no longer there. My thoughts are with all those effected.
Colleen Milburn
From me and my family in Bendigo (some had to be evacuated – homes not lost, thank god) – I just have to say – incredible, amazing reporting, Darren – well done.

Wow, this is almost unbelievable.
One thing I would like to suggest to all in the way of the fire.
Create a fireline around your home, get anything and everything that will burn easily away from your house. Put it inside if needed.
Use a rake or whatever you have, create a perimeter around the home, provided the winds arent too bad, this could help save your home.
I wish there was something we could do to help you guys over there.
Amy Van Den Berg
Hi, my house mates and I live in Diamond Creek. We are prepaing to leave if something happens. Fires are a minimum of half an hour away.

I pray you’ll be safe whatever happens! All the best. Hope the firebombers are doing their thang!
