Your favourite Australian country pubs

G’day blokes and sheilas.

Let’s cut to the chase and get down to tin tacks. After a few too many beers or cocktails we start to talk crap. Some even talk crap before they hit the piss, but that’s another story.

Aussie country pubs are like a magnet for weary travellers who need to whet their whistle with a few neck oils. I’ve been fortunate to be thirsty whilst travelling and just had to stop for a refresher or two.

The Hotel Dorrigo is a pub I visited recently that just hit the spot. Stayed overnight and had some good pub tucker and of course a few grogs.

Tell me about your favourite Aussie country pubs and what they have to offer. Did you have a good time there and a few too many?

The Pub in the Paddock is a Tasmanian institution and has been licensed since 1880. It literally sits in the middle of a paddock in the lush green Pyengana Valley about 30 minutes from the east town of St Helens. On the East Coast of Tasmania. What makes it a Tasmanian institution, is its beer drinking pig
Patrons of the pub are encouraged to buy stubbies for the unfortunate pig, imprisoned in a pen behind a sign reading “Hi! Geez I’m dry. I’d luv a beer.” When speaking about Slops, the bartender was quoted as stating proudly: “He drank 76 full strength stubbies in one session. The pig has gone now as the rspca got wind of the drinking pig.But rumors has it there is another in its place. I was amazed to see this pub, as its right in middle of a paddock, the staff are great, and full of tall tales as well, there have been alot of people thru this pub, from all around the world, this is one great pub, i got sloshed there myself.

    Joe,

That’s an excellent list you’ve racked up cobber – I drink a toast to you for that fine effort. The knickers and g-bangers hanging around the place at Daly Waters sounds interesting. Certainly a little more exciting than business cards. Thanks Joe.

    Shane,

I could be tempted to enter a drinking contest with a pig in a pub in Tassie, but I’d have to be sponsored to do so. If I can’t keep up with the oinker, then at least the fun will be in trying – until the room starts spinning that is! Thanks for the tip and info.

    Shanghaiwu,

Thank you. I haven’t been to Underbool at this stage. In fact, you sent me searching for my road atlas to discover it’s on the Mallee Highway between Ouyen and Pinnaroo. That would be a 12-18 stubbie trip from Melbourne I suspect. I’ll put that on the list of ‘must do’s’. Thanks.

Darren from my childhood I have memories of waiting outside the Werrimull hotel with my mum waiting to pick up my dad. Another pub i have frequented in my day is not so much in the country but it is called the Scottish Cheifs and it is in Geelong.

I thought you would get a big response to the post, maybe the demographics of redbubble are more in line with…. stay at home in front of computer and smoke pot:-)

PUBS…oh, I do love this topic. Even as a teenager, I’d rather spend an afternoon/evening at the pub than traipsing round the clubs.
I haven’t travelled around country Victoria all that much but will post a few..

    Star Hotel – Walhalla

If you would consider Gellong ‘country’ then I’d have to say The Barking Dog also.

    The Grand Central at Cobram.

    and of course…the Daylesford pub

I love a real mix of pubs..from the modern and hip, to the old and falling to bits! :))
