Hartmannswillerkopf

David Davies

Weymouth, Canada

Artist's Description

A Sherman tank of the First French Army used during the reconquest of Alsace in on display at WW2 French fortifications in Gerstheim, Alsace, France. The tank has been named Hartmannswillerkopf by its commander in honour of the WW1 battle site of the same name in the Vosges Mountains, also in Alsace. Ironically, the name Hartmannswillerkopf is German, as are probably the majority of names in Alsace.
