Flagler College, St. Augustine by

(collegeprofiles.com) Founded in 1968 as a memorial to Henry M. Flagler, industrialist, oil magnate, land developer, and railroad pioneer, Flagler College’s mission is to offer a rigorous academic program in a supportive environment at a cost far below that of similar institutions. The College is located in the oldest city in the United States on the northeast coast of Florida, midway between Jacksonville and Daytona Beach, four miles from the Atlantic Ocean. Flagler is a private, independent college that offers a four-year program leading to the baccalaureate degree in carefully selected preprofessional and liberal studies. The focal point of the campus is Ponce de Leon Hall, formerly a famous resort hotel. Described as a masterpiece of American architecture, the Ponce de Leon is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. With enrollment strictly limited to 1,500 students, Flagler strives to develop the qualities that smallness fosters. These qualities include, but are not limited to, civility, integrity, loyalty, dependability, and affection. An atmosphere of friendliness and respect prevails throughout the College. Thirty-seven states and fifteen countries are represented in the student body; fifty-six percent of the students are residents of the state of Florida. Flagler serves a traditional college-age student population, the majority of whom live in the College’s residence halls. The students indicate that strength of academics, cost, size, and location are the major reasons for their choosing Flagler.
