The Sissiboo Salt Marsh runs alongside the Sissiboo River at Weymouth, Nova Scotia, Canada. The origins of the name “Sissiboo” are not known. The most credible is a derivation from the Mi’kmaq word for river, “Seboo”, although it is thought locally that it derives from “Six hiboux”, French for six owls. The story goes that a Mi’kmaq pointed at a flock of six passing owls to an early French settler calling them “six hiboux”. As the river was also in the direction the Mi’kmaq was pointing the Frenchman thought he was referring to it.
