This was ‘Ty Bach’ (Welsh for little house), our trusty VW home during our travels through Europe and Morocco. In the background are the red sand dunes at Merzouga, in the Sahara Desert of Morocco.

So sorry I didn’t wash it before taking the picture but water was in rather short supply!

I’ve been an amateur photographer for as long as I can remember, which at my age is about a couple of weeks! I’ve owned film cameras from Zeiss, Scheider, Leica, Nikon and Olympus, as well as digital cameras from Pentax and Canon, and still have several, if I can ever find them. I currently use a Sony NEX-5N with an 18-55mm zoom lens, and after a year of ownership am still learning all the functions.

wow!!! this is great David, what a lovely way to travel in a good old VW CAMPER van!!!! I like those hills in the background too

  • Thanks, Sita, the sand dunes were magnificent and the kids had so much fun running up and down. We practically had to drag them off. I still have a jar of that red Sahara sand.

    nice little mobile home
gy not wahing looks more authentic i like this

  • Thanks, John! I think the dirt was at least partially holding it together, though in the year we were on the road we only had one minor problem with it and that was relatively minor.

Sounds like a great adventure …

  • It certainly was, Tom; we were on the road for a year and it felt really strange when we stopped and had to go back to work!

Looks like this one’s done a mile or two!

  • I don’t remember how many it had on it when we sold it, which was about 1985, but it was a few! lol And we had bought it second hand in the first place, but it ran like clockwork.

It’s seven degrees Fahrenheit out and the wind is whipping the snow all over the place and you dare to show me a camper in the sun and sand? I’m so jealous. Looks like fun, David.

  • It was a wonderful year, Bryan and we never had temperatures of 7℉ to contend with. It got pretty cool in the UK over the winter, lots of ice, but never snow. Except once, in Andorra, where there was a lot of snow but none on the roads!

Fantastic me & My Sweetheart are Buying A VW Splitty and travelling far & wide soon THIS Must have been an Amazing Journey & A Lifetime Opportunity Good On You Cracking Story,Pic Etc Francis

  • Francis, I wish you a truly wonderful time on your travels. I would so love to do it again. One of the nicest parts is that the biggest decisions you have to make every day is ‘What shall I have for breakfast?’! The rest of the time you just point your camper in a rough direction and see where you end up. Morocco was a little daunting as it was just SO DIFFERENT! However, on the second day we met up with four German families and for the rest of the time we spent there we all travelled together in convoy which allowed us to do things we might not have done if travelling alone – like camping wild in strange places. Tremendous. I hope you have an absolutely magic time and take plenty of photographs. Regrettably I didn’t take nearly enough. Enough is just not enough!!! Cheers, David

Great shot. I use my Kia Pregio to go away for photo trips. I have a bed base and mattress and underneath the bed is all the camping gear including a square market type marquee thingy I put up at the back of the van for extra room and privacy. Sure beats paying for motels everywhere.

  • What a great idea! Motels are a bugger and as long as your not travelling in sub-zero or sweltering weather, then it’s just fine. Sleeping bags are terrific. Glad to see another happy Kia owner – I have a Kia Soul. Cheers, David
