Took a trip to Cape Sable Island today off the south east tip of Nova Scotia, Canada, about a 400 km round trip. Weather wasn’t bad when we left but when we got there we found ourselves in thick fog.

I really wanted to see the lighthouse, which is on a little island off The Hawk, off the south of Cape Sable Island, but the fog was so thick that while we could hear the foghorn, there was no sight of the lighthouse.

(Wikipedia) Cape Sable Island, locally referred to as Cape Island, is a small Canadian island located at the southernmost point of the Nova Scotia peninsula. Sometimes confused with Sable Island, Cape Sable Island forms the eastern limit of the Gulf of Maine, opposite Cape Cod.

The island is situated in Shelburne County south of Barrington Head, separated from the mainland by the narrow strait of Barrington Passage, but has been connected since 1949 by a causeway. The largest community on the island is the town of Clark’s Harbour, Nova Scotia.

(Wikipedia) The Hawk is a community on Cape Sable Island in the Canadian province of Nova Scotia, located in the Barrington municipal district of Shelburne County. It is the most southerly community in Nova Scotia.

I’ve been an amateur photographer for as long as I can remember, which at my age is about a couple of weeks! I’ve owned film cameras from Zeiss, Scheider, Leica, Nikon and Olympus, as well as digital cameras from Pentax and Canon, and still have several, if I can ever find them. I currently use a Sony NEX-5N with an 18-55mm zoom lens, and after a year of ownership am still learning all the functions.

This looks a foreboding place my friend, the lighthouse is truely needed.

  • It really is. Next time with luck! There’s a sign written on a piece of driftwood at the lighthouse parking lot “if you want to go to the lighthouse call xxx xxxx”. Apparently a guy comes along in a dory, picks you up and runs you over to the lighthouse. drops you off then comes back to pick you up later. Have to try that. When I can see! lol

Great shot of a crappy Day Mate. No shortage of seaweed is there.

  • No shortage at all, Al! They must have had a storm as the whole beach was covered with it. And it really smelled bad!

The fog in the background and the brightly coloured seaweed in the foreground makes it an excellent image. Well done David.

  • Thank you, Ralph. Had to make something of the fog!
