Canadian Coast Guard Cutter Westport by David Davies

Canadian Coast Guard Cutter Westport by

(Wikipedia) CCGC Westport, a Canadian Coast Guard search and rescue (SAR) vessel is homeported in Westport, Brier Island, Nova Scotia.

She is a multi-task, high endurance, Arun-class lifeboat, based on the United Kingdom 15.77 metres (51.7 ft) Arun-class motor life boat design. She entered service in 1997 and is staffed by a crew of four.

I’ve been an amateur photographer for as long as I can remember, which at my age is about a couple of weeks! I’ve owned film cameras from Zeiss, Scheider, Leica, Nikon and Olympus, as well as digital cameras from Pentax and Canon, and still have several, if I can ever find them. I currently use a Sony NEX-5N with an 18-55mm zoom lens, and after a year of ownership am still learning all the functions.

oh that is so vibrant and wonderful!

  • Glad you like it, Sita. I imagine anyone lost at sea in the area would just love to see those brilliant colours coming towards them when in need. We just lost a clam digger out of Digby this week, total of five men, including the son and two nephews of one of my wife’s co-workers. Real shock!

Great photo David – the Arun class self-righting lifeboats were a favourite of mine.

We had a look at one at Yarmouth when on the Isle of Wight that was for sale in
2000 – I tried to get the Ports of Auckland to buy it as their replacement Pilot vessel
as in those days we did as much rescue work as the Police boat. They wouldn’t agree and bought a tin-fizzie instead for $750,000 !!

  • I thought it might be self-righting. Strange looking boat, though!

  • Thanks, Steve. It’s been pretty busy this last week looking for a clam digger out of Digby, lost with five crew.

They always look top heavy to me but they self right if they go over. Great pieces of engineering.

  • Good to hear. My eldest son is a Coast Guard RIB pilot on northern Vancouver Island, though a bit smaller boat than this! lol
