Artist's Description

Vultures are certainly not to be messed with and this was about as close as I was going to this lot. These aggressive and very argumentative fellows were part of a group of fairly immature African White-backed Vultures (Gyps africanus) and Rüppell’s Griffon Vultures (Gyps rueppellii) lunching on the carcass of a buffalo. The ones on the left in this image are African White-backed Vultures; the ones on the right, the Rüppell’s. There was a huge amount of posturing and fighting for whatever was ripped from the carcass. The large Rüppell’s displaying launched into another one seconds after this shot was taken trying to steal its meat. It must be a stressful society to live in.
