Artist's Description

A couple of years ago, in an unseasonally cold October, I was asked by some Italian friends to take photographs at the baptism of the baby daughter of their son and his wife. Earlier that year, in a tiny chapel in sweltering July and with the sweat dripping off the priest’s chin, I’d photographed the baptism of their daughter’s young son, so I seemed to be taking on the role of family photographer – a welcome role with such a delightful family.
The baby’s baptism went peacefully and she looked on more bemused than afraid as the priest performed his rituals.
However, part of the fun of these occasions is to look around at the faces of the assembled company and, given that you have carte blanche to snap away with a flash, no one pays you any attention. This little girl was part of the congregation and having probably seen it all before, if only at her own baptism, was more intrigued by the candles than the ceremony. Held in her patient grandfather’s arms, she occupied herself with the candles and surrounding paraphernalia, looking up once in a while, giving me this magical moment to capture.
