Lazy lions by David Clarke

Lazy lions by

This shot of an aging male and female pair of lions was taken in the Masai Mara in Kenya. Judging from their battle scars, this pair had been around the block a few times. But here, their one intention was to get a bit of shade in the late morning sun and push up some zzzs until supper time.

Canon EOS3 with Canon 17-35mm f2.8 lens, fuji provia transparency film.

Although the surrounding lights are very strong .. your photo is not at all victimized by tat fact ( maybe due to that protecting angel called : PS CS3?)
The relaxed pose of the Lions is almost a provocation :-)

  • Grazie mille, Giovanni!! In fact it’s a straight scan from the transparency – I was very pleased with the scan so I left it as is!! I took the exposure from the camera since I couldn’t persuade my wife to run over the the lions to get a reading on the incident light meter from their heads!!

David, this is an awesome capture. It makes we want to take a few days off and visit the Kruger…..only two hours drive from here. Great work here.

  • Many thanks, Olitto. I’d love to go back there too – unfortunately it’s a little more than two hours!!

Just charming, David. I was there a mere 37 years ago and witnessed a cheetah bringing down a gazelle. It’s all a long way from the local zoo…

  • Thanks so much, John. That’s a long time, you should go back. It’s still breathtakingly beautiful and these scenes fortunately are still there!
