This cheetah was one of a pair that had just finished feasting on an impala they had caught. The blood picked out by the sun on his whiskers and face is also apparent as a reddish tone to some of his fur. After they had left what remained to the vultures, he and his partner walked slowly over to where we were parked under a tree, somewhere I think they had earmarked as a shaded spot to clean up and sleep off their meal. However, they decided they didn’t like the company and ambled slowly off to the next tree to doze in private.

The two little blips by his right ear are flies!

Taken in the Masai Mara, Kenya

Canon EOS3 with Canon 70-200mm f2.8L lens; Fuji Velvia transparency film scanned with a Nikon Superscan ED5000 scanner.

Living for partly in Italy, partly in Phuket and partly in other locations around the world – Hong Kong & Kenya when I can – I spend a lot of time photographing anything and everything. I particularly enjoy the challenge of capturing shots of wildlife large and small – from elephants to insects. A wider selection of my work can be seen on my website at www.dgcphoto.com.
