Dubai is a city of superlatives – highest, biggest, largest, most etc. This shot, looking along the coast towards downtown Dubai, was taken on an unusually clear day in November 2008 from the Skyview Bar of the Burj Al Arab hotel (a building itself brimming with superlatives). On the horizon, about 20km away, can be seen the still-to-be-completed Burj Dubai soaring over 800 metres into the sky (burj is ‘tower’ in Arabic). Rumoured to have some 162 storeys when it is finished, it dwarfs the mere 60-storey blocks around it!
In the forground is the Jumeirah Beach Hotel and the 360 bar at the end of the causeway.
I was lucky enough to get a behind-the-scenes tour of the Burj Al Arab from one of my son’s friends who happens to work there. Quite amazing. I’ll be posting some of the interior shots in due course.

Canon 40D with 10-22mm EFS lens at 10mm; ISO 200 f10 1/250. Bit of colour temperature adjustment on PS since the shot was taken through tinted glass.

Living for partly in Italy, partly in Phuket and partly in other locations around the world – Hong Kong & Kenya when I can – I spend a lot of time photographing anything and everything. I particularly enjoy the challenge of capturing shots of wildlife large and small – from elephants to insects. A wider selection of my work can be seen on my website at

Amazing shot Dave, must be one heck of a city

  • Thanks very much, Rob. It’s certainly amazing but because it’s all so new, it seems rather unreal. It really has a buzz to it though.
