When you think about penguins, you tend to think of Antarctica and all those thousands of birds huddled together against the elements. Well there are also penguins in Africa – African penguins. They used to be called jackass penguins on account of the noise they make, which is a bit like the braying of a donkey. Then it was discovered that penguins in South America make the same noise, so the African species were given a more refined name!
One of the best places to see African penguins is Boulders Beach on the Cape Peninsula south of Cape Town. There you can literally swim with them or enjoy their company on the beach. The colony there now numbers some 3000 and is well-protected. They are, like all penguins, a little ungainly on land, but once they are in the water, they are amazingly graceful.
