Wasps always seem to build their nests in inconvenient places. This swarm chose a brass fish that sits on our terrace, making the nest rather too close to the house for comfort.

I set up the camera with a remote shutter release and a couple of flash units to record the comings and goings. For this shot, one of the flash units failed to fire, giving a dramatic feel to the shot as a single wasp takes on an aggressive stance while eye-balling the camera.

Living for partly in Italy, partly in Phuket and partly in other locations around the world – Hong Kong & Kenya when I can – I spend a lot of time photographing anything and everything. I particularly enjoy the challenge of capturing shots of wildlife large and small – from elephants to insects. A wider selection of my work can be seen on my website at www.dgcphoto.com.
