Red Squirrel 2
Red squirrels are an endangered species in the UK, their numbers threatened by disease, grey squirrels and habitat loss.
There are still a few places where they are to be found, one of which is the Lake District where this extremely tame fellow lived with a few others in the garden of the house where we were staying.
They all seemed to spend their time collecting nuts from the bird table and burying them around the garden. They certainly had no fear of humans and would join us at the garden table if there was a chance of a nut to be grabbed.

What a great capture, what a shame that they are endangered. I loved to watch them when I used to live in Holland. They are wonderful animals.
David Clarke replied
Thanks very much, Esther. Yes, they are cute little animals and not so often seen now in the UK.
Jane Marin
Wonderful capture, David. Wish we had such photogenic wildlife in my part of the world!!

Jane, thanks very much – sorry, I missed your comment when you posted it – much appreciated.
Karen Kaleta
I love this shot. We have flying squirrels that are also endangered but I always have some here on the property. Hard to catch in a photo since those little guys are nocturnal. These little red squirrels though we call “Boomers” and they are rare here too. This is a wonderful capture!
David Clarke replied
Thanks so much, Karen. This fellow was in the UK, in the Lake District. In Tuscany we have a type that is much darker and definitely shyer. A challenge for me when we return there next week is to try to get some shots of one.
Cora Wandel
Great work, David!
David Clarke replied
Many thanks, Cora, much appreciated!
Andrew Murrell
What a fantastic shot. he is so cute. glad you caught the entire tail as it is fasinating.
David Clarke replied
Thanks very much, Andrew. The whole shoot was quite amusing. I set up the camera on the ground with focus set on the peanut. I then attached a remote release and sat back as the squirrel came to take the nut. Each time the shutter fired, he jumped in the air in surprise, so he got quite a few nuts until I’d got the shot I wanted!

TickerGirl
They are such cute creatures :)
Here in Canada the red squirrels are very rare, outnumbered by the grey and black ones.
David Clarke replied
Thanks very much, TickerGirl! It’s the same in the UK, they’re very much on the decline. Here in Tuscany, they seem to be holding their own, I’m pleased to say (although they eat all my walnuts!!) :))

Ann Van Breemen
Oh wow, David. He is so cute. I searched in vain last year for the red squirrels while in the U.K. in August. Was in the right places, but it rained so much they didn’t want to come out to play. I did eventually see some in Switzerland. They are so gorgeous, especially in the sunlight.:)
David Clarke replied
Thanks very much, Ann. This one was actually taken last August in the UK in the Lake District. They are certainly hard to find; this one and his friends just happened to live in and around the garden where we were staying and appeared on the one dry evening we had! I haven’t seen the Swiss ones, but the red squirrels we get here in Tuscany are much darker, and not so tame! They come near to the house in the spring eating blossom from the trees, but otherwise we don’t see them. There are two shots of them on page four of my photos. Thanks again for stopping by and thanks for the fav:))

I like this! Great composition and colours. Sharpness and details are excellent
Well done .. but I DONT cuddle this one since they are loaded with flees :-))
(Un altra bestia per favore)
Ciao Davide
Giovanni
David Clarke replied
Hey, as my neighbour’s dog would say, ‘what’s a few fleas between friends!!’ I think cuddling would have stretched this little fella’s friendliness a bit; he was just after the nuts! Grazie mille, Maestro G!

Aquamojo
Awesome shot. I take it you were on your belly to get on the same plane as the squirrel? Interesting perspective. Well done.
David Clarke replied
Hi Mo, sorry, I missed your comment when you posted it. No I wasn’t on my belly, I cheated by prefocussing the camera on a peanut a few inches in front of the camera and then putting it on manual, stood it on the ground, attached an extension shutter release and sat a few feet away, waiting. The squirrel would come up and grab the nut and which point I would click the shutter, the squirrel would jump in alarm and run off with the nut. Hilarious. Then a couple of minutes later he’d be back for another nut. Half an hour of great fun and a pile of shots of which this was the best!
Yvonne Less
What a cute feller! Great shot! :)
David Clarke replied
Many thanks, Yvonne:))
Melinda Stewar...
Oh David, what a face! Great shot! You know what a sucker I am when it comes to squirrels. Any squirrel. How I wish our gray squirrels had never been introduced to England both for the beautiful little red squirrel and gray squirrel. Not a good situation for either.
David Clarke replied
Thanks very much, Melinda, I’m delighted you liked it. He certainly had a very cheeky look about him!
LavenderMoon
Very, very cute shot.. perfectly timed and framed.
