American White Pelican Stretches Wings

Deb Fedeler

Hawkeye, United States

Artist's Description

American White Pelicans visit Sweet Marsh Wildlife Area near Tripoli, Iowa in the spring. The birds are quite large and are wonderful to watch, especially when they stretch their wings and reveal that these white birds actually have black feathers on their wings. You can also see the keel on their culman (upper bill) which they grow during the breeding season.
