Killdeer have been a favorite of mine for many years. This year seems to have produced a ""bumper crop" of babies this year. The young ones are quite large now, but mother Killdeer still protects them by doing her “Injured Dance”. Mother Killdeer “cries” and trills loudly to gain my attention. Then she flashes the red on her tail which, when seen quickly, looks remarkably like blood. She also will lift a wing to improve the illusion that she is injured. She will do this dance until you get too close, and then she flies away with all grace and speed. I took this picture on the front lawn of my acreage in northeast Iowa. There were 2 other Killdeer also trying to get my attention, so there must be a lot of “babies” in the area.
