The Earth Intimate

The earth intimately
Knows their blood—

Their sleeping forms
Rocked,
Safely held, in soft
Tuck for now
Most precious
Are these
Her once living elements—

But even she—
As with her first Christ—
Remains
Of the shadow
Looking out—

Yet from darkness
We sense in silhouette
A hidden joy
Our light—

By the wildflowers
On the graves—
Reminded and strengthened
In faith as we mourn
Our honorable dead
With freshly cut roses
We see that heaven
Has also
Not forgotten—

The Earth Intimate
