Have you ever seen Fawlty Towers???
When I was in my early twenties I worked in an Hotel in Vianen that was exactly like it!!
It was constructed out of two buildings, one very old one that had been on the spot for hundreds of years allready and a rather new building that was attached later. Because they were built in different centuries the floor levels weren’t aligned. Therefor there were all kinds of funny little stairs in between connecting them together. The old building had been reconstructed numerous times over the past and not always very succesfull, just like in the Fawlty Towers series the building was full of funny shaped hallways and small rooms. My boss was a former marine and mad as a hatter, compared to him John Cleese is a dull person, I had to lock him up one two occasions but that’s a completely different story!

Once a year we had a bunch of marines over, for a week. They specialized in deconstructing bombs and other explosives under water and had to go back to school once a year in my area. Rough guys but they were good fun.

The Hotel was allways busy but when we had them in it meant alot of extra work, we were all making long days and due to that I mostly disdn’tt go back home in the evening but instead i spent the night there. My room was nr 12, the last room in the old part of the building, located in a funny extension of the hallway between a kindof a walk in closet and a small staircase, opposite my room was the door from the laundry room, that one was at an angle and had a wooden floor that made a peeping noise when walking over it.

One night I had been working late and the marines asked me over to their table to join them for a beer, it was way over midnight and my shift had just ended so I changed clothes and sat with them for a while. There was one guy named Gerrit who was constantly trying to make eye contact. He was tall and muscled, intelligent and had a great sense of humor, great looking guy too….but man COCKY!!! ……And I hate cocky guys….

We had a drink and had some fun and at some point he started to rub my legs under the table with his foot in the meantime staring at me…like he was challenging me….I decided to rub back a little bit….boy did that make him happy! ;)
After a while I gave him a wink and said that I had to hit the hay since I had to get up really early to serve breakfast. We said goodnight and when I passed him to get to the hallway he grabbed my wrist and pulled me over whispering ’which room are you in???"
I said room 13……see you in a bit, don;t make it too obvious it will cost me my job…he tickled the palm of my hand and said …30 minutes!!

I went upstairs to room nr 12 laughing my ass off, room 13 DID NOT EXIST!!! Room nr 12 was the last one in the old building, room nr 14 the first room in the new one!!!!!!!

It ’didn’t take him 30 minutes…after 15 he was there, walking up and down the stairs, up and down the hallway, new building, old building, back to the new one etc……I was laughing my butt off!!!!!!!!
It lasted for about ten minutes and he left but aparently he still couldn;t believe it so he was back again 45 minutes later, I nearly wet my pants!!

You should have seen his face in the morning when I was serving breakfast….“Good morning Sir, how was your night???”

This all came back to me as I was constructing this image, I did a google search on the Hotel and my old boss and even found that there was a book written about this special division of the marines. The Hotel is mentioned in it and so is my boss….the story I just told you probably wasn;t heroic enough it’s not in it, but now you know anyway!!!!

love,
Daisy

I am disappointed that we still haven’t got a zoom feature, there’s so much detail that never shows, I would be happy to trade the scribble tool for something useful! :)
Here’s a zoom!
