McGregor Family, Royal is my Race

The Scottish sir-name McGregor has appeared in various historical documents spelled in a variety of ways. Scribes from that era recorded names according to sound rather than any standard set of spelling rules. and therefore the name appears as; MacGregor, MacGrigor, MacGrioghair (Gaelic) and others.

The name is first found in use in the Argyllshire (Gaelic erra Ghaidheal), the region of western Scotland corresponding roughly with the ancient Kingdom of Dál Riata, in the Strathclyde region of Scotland, now part of the Council Area of Argyll and Bute, where they clan members were seated from very ancient times, rumored to have existed well before the Norman Conquest and the arrival of Duke William at Hastings in 1066 A.D.

Many Dalriadan families proliferated in North America. Descendants still populate many communities in the eastern parts of both the United States and Canada. Some settled in Canada as United Empire Loyalists, in the wake of the American War of Independence. As with many of the Scottish Families on both sides of the border they have recovered much of their heritage in the 20th century through clan societies and highland games. Immigration records indicates that some of the first North American immigrants bore the name McGregor or one of the variants listed earlier: Duncan McGregor settled in South Carolina in 1716; along with Mall; Gregor McGregor settled in Virginia along with John in 1716; John McGregor settled in Boston in 1766.
