This piece continues on from a recent series, “Remember the Song Birds?” which was part of a body of work that commented on the way we impact on the environment. In these paintings, elements of the ecology are removed, to encourage the viewer to consider their absence. Natural features reveal their vulnerability as transparent layers, or are painted white to symbolically remove them from the landscape.
The songbirds and the ghost birds in this series are feeding in a fruiting white cedar tree, which is a rainforest tree native to the area where I live. I have “removed” the birds and the cedar tree, and the foliage detail that is left revealed is camphor laurel which is a terribly invasive weed species that is taking over this area. (northern NSW Australia)

Karyn – this is beautiful – it reminds me of some art that I saw recently wich was pochoir technique, using stencils which I also want to try. i love the image. it would look wonderful on silk as a scarf too
thanks Julie -Ann. I’m glad you like it. I don’t know about the pochoir technique (will have to google that!) It’s actually not painted with stencils, although it has that look about it.
