"....prime location with spectacular views of Mt Boogarum" (diptych)

acrylic and mixed media on canvas
140 cm x 60 cm

I am inspired by the beauty, complexity and vulnerability of the natural world and am interested in questioning how humans have upset the ecological balance of their environment.

Currently, I am working on a series of paintings inspired by the area where I have been living and working for the last 18 months, in the rain-forest bordering Mt. Jerusalem National Park in Northern NSW. Living here has made me even more aware of our impact on the natural world. There are several endangered species in this area and yet more subdivision and development is proposed.

In my painting, ”.....prime location with spectacular views of Mt Boogarem.”, natural features reveal their vulnerability as transparent layers, or are painted white to symbolically remove them from the landscape, to encourage the viewer to consider their absence. I divide the landscape with straight lines to represent our tendency to segment and consume the land and the painting is also divided into diptych format to further support this concept of division.

From the new body of work for my upcoming exhibition:
“Remnant Wilderness” – about our impact on the environment.

Exhibition opens saturday afternoon october 3rd
at the Northern Rivers Gallery 44 cherry st Ballina NSW.
and will run until 25 october.
I’ll be launching a preview of the exhibition on my website www.karynfendley.com.au in September.
