Little Fringe Dancer

Little Fringe Dancer

This photograph was taken at the Wa:k Pow Wow held annually at the San Xavier del Bac Mission in Tucson, Arizona. Drummers, dancers and singers come from all over the country to participate. The backgrounds in these pow wow photos are always very distracting, so I’m experimenting with different ways to get rid of them. I used the radial blur in Photoshop Elements on this one. Photographed with a Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ 28.

I remember this in another rendition. Not sure what you used there. But this radial blur seems to work well. It highlights her energy.

  • Linda Gregory replied

I blurred the background in Hoop Dancer, but used gaussien blur. I like the energy that the radial blur gives to this photo and it accomplishes the same thing. This was done in two duplicate layers. In the top layer, I selected the dancer and all the fringe (that’s what took all the time) and deleted the background. I then used the radial blur on the layer underneath and flattened the layers. I do think that a little of this effect goes a long way, so you won’t see it in too many of my other photos.

It looks great on this one. Particularly since the colors are in the top half and the dirt stayed plain below. Good choice.

  • Linda Gregory replied

Thank you, Linda. I tried it on my Hoop Dancer and only wish I’d known about this effect when I posted it to RB and printed it for display at the Camera Club. I like it much better, but a little of this effect goes a long way so I won’t be posting it to RB anytime soon.

BRAVO, Linda, brilliant solution to a problem I hadn’t figured out how to lick!

  • Linda Gregory replied

Thank you very much. I’ve struggled with this problem and usually use gaussien blur, but when a friend sent me a RB member’s photo with this technique and asked me how to do it, I realized it was the perfect solution. But I wouldn’t want to do it with all the photos with a distracting background.

  • whalegeek

    whalegeek

That’s great…guess I’ll have to become savvy about this technique one of these days. In the meantime, I’ll enjoy your beautiful image.

  • Linda Gregory replied

Glad you enjoy my photos. The technique is really quite simple. Make a copy of the background, select the subject, inverse so that you’re working on the background and use the radial blur (filters>blur>radial blur). The cool thing about this is that you can place the center of the blur anywhere in the photograph you want.

  • Donna Ridgway

What a good idea for the blur!

  • Linda Gregory replied

It’s very difficult getting rid of background distractions at an event like this, but this one works perfectly, especially with the motion of the subject. I wouldn’t want to do it to all this type of photo though. It could be overdone.

Wow … I’m going to have to try that!

  • Linda Gregory replied

The technique is simple, Geoffrey, using the radial blur filter in Elements, but selecting out all that fringe took lots of time and patience.
