Out Of The West

This photograph was taken at the Empire Ranch open house in Sonoita, Arizona. The open house is held to promote the restoration of the 22-room adobe ranch house. It is a photographer’s paradise with many activities and people to shoot. Photographed with a Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ 50.

What great detail and rough “Cowboy” look. It almost looks like it could be a painting. Great shot Linda.

  • Linda Gregory replied

Thanks, John. This was a nice photo without the texture treatment, but the effect really put emotion to it, I think.

    Hi,
I’m glad you liked Red Nebula, I spent a lot of time combining the original gouache painting with the textured fonts and background.
I wanted to give the poster a kind of retro futuristic aspect.

As for your photographs, I really find them amazing, especially “out of the West”, whose colours and texture remind me of what I wanted to achieve with Red Nebula, and “let’s rob a bank”. They both have a kind of Norman Rockwell style and warm style.
There are two fine pieces of art

  • Linda Gregory replied

Thank you very much, Vincent. With Out of the West I used a wrinkled paper texture on top of a grungy frame. The color of the paper provided the aged look. I don’t remember what texture I used with Let’s Rob a Bank, but if I remember, I’ll let you know. I haven’t gotten into layering fonts, too.

  • Linda Gregory replied

I think I used the aged wrinkled paper texture under Let’s Rob A Bank, too. The photograph was fairly dark to begin with lending the ominous look.

I’m amazed nobodys mentioned the Marlboro man posters!...This is a classic image and reminds me of those. The colours, details and textures involved are magnificent. Terrific shot!

  • Linda Gregory replied

Thank you very much. Now that you mention it, this does look like a Marlboro poster.

I love the vintage look of this and the others, Linda.
    Excellent work on your part!
When you say grungy “frame” what exactly do you mean- if you don’t mind my asking?
    – Bobbi

  • Linda Gregory replied

It’s a layer with an irregular or rough-edged frame as in a picture frame. If you look carefully at Out Of The West, I think you can see a subtle framing effect on the outside of the photo. I know that if you do a search for free grunge texture you’ll know it when you see it.

Thanks so much for your helpfulness, Linda.
I have a lot of downloaded textures. Guess I haven’t been to the right site with frames.
    Cheers! – Bobbi

  • Linda Gregory replied

Try stock.xchng.com and check their grunge textures. That’s where I got most of mine.
