beneath the tree she stood
half waving, half smiling.
her face obscured.

she had presence.
an elusive intangible
that told more about her
than a study of every mark
on her face and heart could even
glimpse

looking back,
she’s still beneath the tree
half waving, half smiling
her face obscured
but now i know her, or
maybe i just know something about her.
i can’t tell
i turn again and walk.

i won’t pass this way again
to see her half smiling face.
now, she will always be a memory
of a summer long gone
and a winter fast approaching
