This is the original in a long history of cars bearing the Monaro nameplate from the stable of General Motors Holden.
The Monaro was released in 1968 as a part of the HK range and was the first two door model in the Holden range.
It was available in all variants from the bottom of the range with the smallest six cylinder in the Holden range coupled to a column shift 3 speed manual transmission right up to the V8 powered models with automatic transmissions and 4 speed manual transmissions available.
The sporting model was the GTS and was fitted with the 186S six cylinder or the Chevrolet V8 engines in 307 or 327 versions.
The top of the line GTS 327 won the Bathurst race for GMH and firmly set the Monaro nameplate in the realms of legend.
The Monaro continued through the HT and HG models and into the all new HQ model before the final two door in the rare and sumptuous HX LE of which around 600 were built.
The Monaro nameplate was then used briefly on 4 door Holdens before fading away.
It was brought back more recently in its proper place on a two door Holden before once again fading into the history books, but to many the original HK is not only the first but also the best…
There is no doubting the stylish lines of this the original!
I took this photograph at the car show held every year on the oval at Old Beach, an outer suburb of the delightful capital city of the island state of Tasmania…
Shot using a Rolleicord V twin lens reflex camera dating from 1954 and taking 6×6 centimetre negatives on 120 medium format film.
Shot on Fuji Superia 100 film and scanned on a Kodak Professional PCD 4050 film scanner.
Metered using the Light Meter app on my iPhone 4 as the Rollei is not fitted with a light meter.
