Over a log
A lazy moment in the life of a polar bear at at the Oregon Zoo. I am going to Churchill next year to see these beautiful animals out on the tundra. There has been a 13% decrease in the Polar bears in that area due to global warming. There is only a short time during the year for viewing these bears, as once the ice solidifies, they migrate in search of food. During the several month hibernation, they have had no food. They replenish their bodies off of seals and other sea going mammals. The polar bears are considered the most dangerous of all bears. While viewing them in their natural habitat, you never leave the gigantic dune buggies. For several days and nights, you sleep, eat and view the wildlife from the dune buggies and from the viewing decks. The bears are considered to be too dangerous to allow people to step down on the tundra (other than the scientists).

They are marvelous animals and do to man’s stupidity, we will lose them someday. Wonderful shot derid!

Thanks for the comments everyone. I do feel an urgency to see them up in Churchill. I don’t think that the chance to see them in their natural habitat will be around much longer.
Lucindawind
gorgeous animal isnt he / she ?!
MegCouch
See! Doesnt he look like he would just snuggle right up to ya? Like he would let you ride on his back? Be your best friend forever? God he is cute!!
In actuality…he would prolly tear your face off…givin the opportunity:)
Great shot.

Thanks for the comments. One of my big fears in going on the Polar bear shoot, is having an urge to pet their snouts as they poke thru the observation deck. I had a friend that went on one of these trips and she said it is very tempting. Of course I value having my hands with all the fingers intact. But they still have such a sense of being cuddly.

Great capture derid

He looks quite despondent, lonely.
fortinpaysagiste
beautiful pic!

Thanks for all the comments. I often wonder how Zoo animals feel. Bored, trapped? Or safe and cared for. This Zoo has wonderful exhibits and no bars. But what about the old fashioned Zoos, with bars. Those really make me sad.
izzymary2
Talk about relaxed but a little bit sad looking
Roseann
He’s a cutie. But in a way it’s not fair. He looks cute enough to hug, but then there’s that whole part where he’ll rip your face off should you try. Totally unfair. But a fantastic shot!

Nice moment, if you open your aperture on a telphoe wide open and get fairly close to the fence the lines will disapear
Deri Dority
Dawson, the lines are a frame. This zoo doesn’t have bars on its exhibits. I wonder if I should reframe this one?
Antanas
Beautiful moment, well done.
Deri Dority
A big thanks to Dawson for pointing out that my last frame looked like fence lines. I don’t know if I unconsciously framed the bear that way or not. I reposted the bear with a more suitable frame. The exhibits at the Oregon Zoo are for the most part, without bars and fences.

Animals are difficult to capture – almost as difficult as young children. Brilliant capture.

Nice shot
ECGardner
Aww he’s so cute… how could something so cute be so dangerous? I will hopefully be making the trip up there sometime in the next couple of years as well. They are incredible creatures and I want a chance to see them in the wild before their habitat is gone. It’s so sad what we’re doing to this planet…

Great shot Derid! So sad that their numbers are dwindling fast… Such a powerful, awesome animal! A number of years ago this guys who worked for TI, once known as GSI (Geophysical Service Incorporated) were doing research in the Arctic. According to a co-worker of mine as she related to me, a polar bear came up from behind attacking and killing one of the men. There happened to be what is called a “white out” at the time and they never saw it coming…....
DWarren
Oops, a typo- I meant to say, “these guys”.
