Red Backed Salamander
One of the very few salamanders that do not return to the marsh to lay eggs. These guys live under rocks and logs in the moist woods. They lay their eggs there, and they hatch out into fully developed tiny salamanders. One other interesting point with these guys is the fact that they have no lungs, respiration takes place through their skin…

u know..in ALL the years i’ve lived in kansas…iv’e YET to see one here in the wild? i’ve seen them i missouri and tennessee…......but never yet kansas?!? this is such a gorgeous image of one of my favorite species/animals….....salamanders rule!

ooooooh yes they do! lol…....my son and i were creek hiking down in Tennessee…and he started yelling ‘mom…i found a salamander!.......(silence…the a squeak)........and it BIT ME!!!’........and yes…it held on till i rescued the poor little thing. lol

lol…not that i’ve found yet? but…i still wouldn’t EAT one. u know…i was reading a book published back in 1925…describing the ‘teeth’ that frogs and toads bite with. hmmm…fascinating.
