Northern Water snake
I got as close as I could to this guy, who for the most part just sat in the water and stared at me!! These are a very non aggressive snake, in fact you probably have a better chance getting bit by a Garter Snake than you do one of these…

Gorgeous Nerodia sipedon! Love how you can see the details in his scales and his eye. He is displaying a very Nerodia-ish personality trait here—they tend to believe themselves to be invisible, thereby allowing nosy photographers and snake lovers to get very close. :) It’s funny that you mention being bitten by garter snakes, as my worst bite ever came at the mouth of a bluestripe garter snake. How embarrassing is it to have to admit that one got mauled by a garter snake!?

I have to agree, my worst bite also came from a Garter snake!! A large female tagged me once about three times in a split second!! I find that the females are much more wanting to bite than the smaller males? My rule of thumb on snakes, S position and a flatten back head and your going to get bit!! I use my snake hook on those ones!! LOL!!

I have no scars and no cool stories except my dad rescued me from a rattle snake one time when I was a teenager. But I do believe that this is a fabulous shot!
